With an early rise, we departed Bathurst train station at 5:45, eager for the day ahead. We all had been excited for this trip since the beginning of the year and it was finally here.
As we waited impatiently on the dock, we were pointing out ships that we thought may be our stay for the following three days. When the South Passage came into view, we were not disappointed; although the ship was smaller than we were anticipating, the atmosphere and welcoming crew members made it easy to feel comfortable.
Upon boarding the ship, we were divided into our watches: red, blue (the best group) and white. Then we were taken through some quick tours and tutorials (we never knew toilets could be so complicated to use), safety briefings and settled into our bunks.
Being the ravenous teenagers that we are, we were over the moon when Hugh, the South Passage cook, called us to our first meal, fresh salad sandwiches. Afterward we were taught the basic steps of sailing; including knot tying, sheets, changing the direction of the sails etc.
We concluded the evening with a quick swim, knot tying competition and a warm dinner, followed by dessert.
