South Passage Daily Report

CLIENT: Sydney to Brisbane Public Voyage

VOYAGE NUMBER:  20190110

FROM: Sydney To: Manly

DATE: 10 January 2019

POSITION: Hunter River, Newcastle

REPORT BY: Blue Watch

Today was our first day sailing. We woke up in Watson’s Bay and had a safety briefing. During the safety briefing each watch group elected their leaders and the mate for the day. We then split into our groups and positioned ourselves to heave the anchor up and pump the water to wash the chain. To do this, we rotated between each job to effectively and quickly complete these tasks. When the anchor was up, we prepared our sails to leave Sydney Harbour.

Once each of the sails were up and secured each watch group took turns in watching and helping out on deck. This included watching the port and starboard sides of the boat, doing a deck check and steering the ship. On our way to Newcastle we passed several pods of dolphins and helped with the gybing process as we changed tack.

As the evening drew in, we steadily approached Newcastle Harbour where we prepared to bring down the sails for the night and lower the anchor. Blue Watch is taking first turns at doing anchor watch throughout the night and we will resume sailing tomorrow morning. This will be continued throughout each night of the voyage.
