REPORT: White Watch
Today we woke up at 6:30 and had a cold breakfast with cereal, porridge, and toast. We learnt our knots, then, as a team, put up the sails. We all learnt how to belay then we set sail out of the Cairns Harbour. Blue had first watch – the moment we left the harbour, we were hit with cold winds, rain and lumpy seas. We navigated our way to Fitzroy Island, swapping our watches every hour. For lunch we had salad sandwiches with ham and salami.
On our way to Fitzroy Island, we put the sails down – a few people got extremely seasick and someone even slid across the deck. After all that, we got into our swimmers and dinghied to shore. We went swimming at Fitzroy Island and saw a few sea animals, including a green sea turtle. Some of us waited on the beach for the tender ride back to the South Passage. While caught in the rain, they exchanged riddles with each other. Upon returning to the ship, there were brief showers to save water and preparations put in place for the knot competition – it was a round turn and two half hitches. For dinner, we had chicken, peas, mash, carrots and gravy. We also had apple pie for dessert. White team commenced their night watch.
