South Passage Daily Report

CLIENT: Ormiston College

VOYAGE NUMBER:  20220916

FROM: Manly to Manly

DATE: 18 September 2022

POSITION: Kounungai

REPORT BY: Blue Watch

Our watch leader Stefan who has the strength of Samson, the wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job has moulded us into an efficient and functioning watch. While practising different types of knots, we ensured that we nailed the technique and took our time to perfect and learn these knots. We then further applied these to help prepare, put up and take down the mainsail.

Although we were confused at times, Stefan made sure to encourage us, as at the beginning Blue Watch were the underdogs. But having found our strengths and grown in confidence, even the seas died down for us to take the helm and depart to the open waters. Very smooth sailing, with velvet waters and not a lick of wind about – we sure were thankful for the motor today.

Unfortunately, we still have not mastered the art of whale identification and admit a case of premature excitement at the site of a whale that turned out to be a speed boat. No matter, we continue to prove ourselves as the superior watch and demonstrated our bravery in the afternoon boat jump.

After a beautiful day of preparing for the big day (command day), Blue Watch is confident that we can raise and lower the mainsail in less than 1 minute. We did end up seeing several whales at very close quarters.
