After a night of being not so gently rocked to sleep (or was it rocked awake?) at Middle Percy Island, the ship’s happy company arose at 0545 hrs to weigh anchor and hoist sails in a strong Southerly of 15 to 20 knots. Skipper Phill set a course of NNE with a Port tack and following sea. Many watches struggled to helm under the tough conditions, but Blue watch thrives under tough conditions. Hot breakfast was bacon and eggs on toast as we passed all the parked coal ships (aka the Hay Point carpark).
This was followed by a gybe expertly led by Blue watch, sadly under appreciated by skipper Phill who called it “shambolic”. What would he know? A pod of dolphins with bubs frolicked in our bow wave for a while – always a sight. Tim spotted a wayward dinghy off our starboard bow – duly reported to Mackay coast guard. A second gybe as we approached Scawfell Island – performed by the Red and White watch leaders and their assistants. Almost as skilful as Blue’s earlier gybe.
Approached Scawfell to be greeted by the neighbours waving their fists in friendly greeting, before deciding to move further out (discretion is the better part of valour). Two large motor vessels appear to be competing for the brightest lights competition, along with 10 other smaller boats.
Today’s knotting competition – bowline and clove hitch. Red currently out in front, closely followed by Blue with White bringing up the rear. The grand final tomorrow should bring out some Pbs. After another delicious meal, we’ve all decided to come back for breakfast. Dessert is calling, so must rush…
