REPORT: White Watch
We started to set sail from Manly harbour. Our journey began with smooth sailing and a strong breeze. We learnt rope handling in the first 20 minutes of sailing. After we practiced, we started to hoist the sails. White watch hoisted the mainsail, and we had to use skills like communication and flaking to make sure everything ran smoothly.
We learnt about the different watch duties and where each person was like lookouts for port and starboard, helming (steering) and deck checking. When hoisting and lowering the sails, we had to use throat and peak halyards to do it safely and efficiently. After we learnt how to do tacking and the importance of tension in the ropes to change directions at the right time.
We saw two schools of Yellow Finned Tuna on Starboard side jumping. Afterwards we learnt how to pack up and tie the gasket around the sails to prepare for anchoring before we could head for a swim at Tangalooma Bay. We anchored tonight at 27◦10.057’S, 153◦22.177’E.
