REPORT: Red Watch
On today’s voyage, the second day of the journey, we started the day on watch. Our watch took over at midnight and 1 am, where we looked at the stars and learnt about different navigation skills and nautical history with our watch leader, Ed. We were woken up for a second time at 6:30 for a delicious cold and hot breakfast, which we ate on the deck, enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. Before we set sail, we participated in another knot tying competition, which today tested our skills in using the reef knot and figure of eight know. Additionally, we competed in a back stay competition, which we won with flying colours.
It was finally time to set sail. Today, our watch was in charge of the mainsail, which we worked together to raise along the mast. We sailed along the east side of Moreton Island, starting with our group on watch. While some of us grappled with seasickness, the remaining members of Red watch tacked the ship and rotated through the positions at ten minute intervals, helping as lookouts and steering the helm to name a few.
After a much-needed lunch, which consisted of burgers, we were off watch. Thus, while some members of the group rested and recovered, the others sat in the net and helped with the jib sail. Finally, in the afternoon, we arrived at Tangalooma, on the west side of Moreton Island and after lowering the sail and anchoring, we took the dinghy and went ashore. Some people enjoyed swimming in the clear and warm water, others stayed on the ship, and others explored the sand dunes on the island.
We came back aboard for a dinner of bangers and mash, another knot tying competition, and some time to complete our Duke of Edinburgh work. The highlights of the day consisted of swimming in the ocean, the beautiful views, and learning more about sailing. We very much enjoyed the experience.
