Departing Tangalooma, the South Passage grade 10 Churchie group raised all sails, Red Watch being on the main sail, we also put two reefs in the main sail, this is due to the significant wind warning.
Although first time raising the main sail as a watch, the process was done with immaculate precision and passion. We had multiple members experience sea sickness throughout our day 2 journey, making it more of an adventure. As a result of the strong wing prediction, and we were sailing in deep sea, every soul on board had to wear their PFDs as a strong safety precaution.
As we turned around the tip of Moreton Island, we sighted many dolphins, shooting past and swimming within close quarters of the ship. We also experienced significant wind loss as we turned around the top of Moreton, relying strong on the ship’s engines while still sailing.
We entered the sea way at 19:30 hours, then dropped the jib and the staysail, dropped the sails and then anchored in the Broadwater for the night. Before we entered the Broadwater – we had dinner, which was bangers and mash with gravy. And following that we ate dessert right before we anchored.
Being in rotation in Red Watch comes with many different enjoyable experiences and learning lessons, but our watch leader Roger was a great teacher easing the nerves for several actions including raising and lowering sails, etc.
