We were woken at 0630 at Tangalooma by Jimmy’s bugle playing. Following this we had some cold breakfast while looking out over the Tangalooma wrecks. There was very little wind, and the water was like glass. There was great excitement amongst the students as they competed for pole position in knot tying. We dined on a delicious hot breakfast of hashbrowns and spaghetti, which was greatly needed for the adventurous day ahead.
After cleaning up the ship we utilised the capstan wheel to raise the anchor and set sail for the big sand hills, where we went for an exhilarating swim. As we looked out on the teal and turquoise waters, we talked about the pod of dolphins we had seen on the way here!
With a full belly we set sail for Peel Island and got a firsthand experience of gybing, the boat was on a steep 45 as we battled the seas with terms like belay, flaking and hauling becoming part of our frequent vocabulary.
As we wound down for the night, we enjoyed Rana’s delicious cooking of spaghetti in preparation for the night watch.
