Today is the fourth day of the voyage, and the weather was very calm and beautiful. The wind and tide were very suitable for sailing, and all of us learnt a lot from today. Firstly, we got up around 6 am in the morning with breakfast around 6.30. We had eggs and bacon today with toast and cereal, many of us went on the deck and enjoyed the view in the morning while we had our breakfast.
After that, we all came up to the deck and put up the sail, heading north on the Western side of K’Gari Island. After the previous three days of teamwork and practice, we got better at working with the cohort and communicating with one another. Through these days, we developed a very strong bond between us and formed life-long friendship. With the sails up, we went to the different watch rotations, and within each watch, we rotated the rolls constantly to ensure that everyone had a go for each roll. Lunch today was burritos, and most of us came up to the deck again to enjoy the wonderful food and view with our friends.
After lunch, we sailed for a short period and had the chance to jump off the ship and have a swim around the ship. The weather was very sunny and hot, which made swimming even better as it was really cool. When we were in the water, we heard the whales singing! This is a highlight of the day, and it was definitely an unforgettable experience that we had during this voyage. After the swim, we got ourselves organised again and sailed back, getting ready for anchoring at Sandy Point, Fraser (K’gari) Island.
As tomorrow will be the exciting command day, we did a mock in the afternoon when we sailed back. We tried to work together as a group, following the instructions of the bosun of the day. At the beginning, we were a bit nervous, but very soon we adjusted ourselves quickly to get into the work. When we were confused or feeling lost, we asked lots of questions to our watch leaders and the skipper and learnt a lot from them.
Dinner was served under the beautiful sunset, and it was pumpkins, beef and gravy. After dinner we did a brief meeting regarding the command day and nominated and voted our leaders for tomorrow. We were all very excited, as tomorrow will be very much on our own, and we wanted to mark a great finish to the voyage, supporting the nominated leaders on board and also reinforce to ourselves all the things we learned and gained throughout the voyage.
