REPORT: Blue Watch
For the second day of the journey, we woke up around 6:00 am to prepare for our day ahead. The entire day involved sailing, aiming to travel from Tangalooma to Fraser Island. As Blue Watch, our first shift began at 8:00 am after a nutritional breakfast. We hoisted the sails to prepare for a long day of sailing, traveling 80nm. The conditions were very choppy with moderate winds going south-west at 8-13 knots. Dolphins and whales were spotted throughout our journey as we sailed past the Sunshine Coast, observing Glasshouse Mountains, Mount Coolum and various coastlines.
Some group members sat on the bowsprit for the first time during breaks of watch. Our watches included various jobs such as steering the helm, looking out for markers and boats and checking the deck. We learnt different skills including tying two half hitches, bowline and figure of eight knots.
Around 7:30 pm, we prepared to cross the bar using various methods of constellation observations and landmarks, ensuring we remained in deep enough water. We finally anchored at the southern end of Fraser Island, also known as K’Gari. With another watch from midnight to 4:00 am, we observed the bearings and were cautious of surrounding boats.
