REPORT: Red Watch
Today, students set sail at mid-morning, departing from Peel Island to arrive at South Tangalooma, Moreton Island. Students were woken up by the bugle and welcomed by an array of cold breakfasts. This included cereal, porridge, oranges and juice. Following this initial breakfast all watches headed up on the ship to learn how to tie a reef knot before competing against other watches in a competition of speed. White watch won the competition, followed by red watch then blue watch. Then once the watch group had finished their knots, they were sent downstairs for hot breakfast. This consisted of toast, scrambled eggs and baked beans.
Our plans to explore onshore Peel Island were shortly changed due to poor weather conditions resulting in an earlier departure. All hands-on deck were called to raise the sails and anchor to begin sailing. Each watch was allocated different sails to raise; Red-Mainsail, White-Headsails, Blue-Staysail. Students were involved in numerous tacks throughout the day. Groups have learnt through the day how to improve their backstay skills.
Throughout the day all of the watch groups rotated through different positions when on watch. They steered the ship, tidied up the boat and kept on lookout for potential dangers. For lunch, passengers were provided beef burgers in which they could help themselves to apply various toppings such as salad items, cheese and condiments.
Later, the ship anchored at South Tangalooma, Moreton Island and everyone pitched in again to lower the sails. Most students than travelled onto the shore in small groups in the inflatable tender. Students enjoyed climbing on sand dunes, playing neachball (Beach ‘Netball) and swimming in the water. After an hour, South Passage participants travelled back to the ship. They quickly dried up and learnt how to tie a figure of eight knot before competing against the other watch groups. The results from the competition were White in first, Red in second, and Blue in last.
Following the competition, the groups were sent inside for dinner. Dinner tonight was bangers and mash with peas and corn. Students all gathered together to complete a journal log for the day as well as a practice adventurous journey adventure reflection. They enjoyed a berry cheesecake for dessert.
