16 students from Ormiston College embarked from William Gunn Jetty on an adventurous journey of a lifetime for their Duke of Ed Bronze award.
Once putting their bags down and setting up their bunks, the students split into their watch groups to listen to the safety briefing. They then learned rope handling basics and the different parts of the ship ready to set sail.
In no time at all, they hoisted the sails and later the cook rewarded them with sandwiches for lunch. The students divided into their groups again to complete their scheduled watches, including learning to tack and sail.
Throughout the day, students spotted pods of whales and dolphins, enjoyed the beautiful waters of Moreton Bay and even adventured onto the bowsprit at times. With the sun shining and barely any wind, sailing was smooth for the most part of the day, however, with wind at approx. 16 knots in the afternoon there was some wild waters to sail in.
As the sun set, they arrived at Peel Island, dropped the sails and the anchor. Students continued on the fun activities with a knot tying competition, with red watch taking out first place and white tailing them in a close second.
After this hard day’s work full of fun, students enjoyed a hearty dinner of chicken and rice with a delicious apple pie for dessert. Through the night, different watches will alternate hours of anchor duty. At 6:30am, the first watch will wake them with the glorious sound of the bugle, and another amazing day will begin.
