REPORT: Red Watch
On our second day of South Passage, we, the red group, began our day at 12 am for our night watch. Our group split into three factions which covered shifts until 4 am. During these shifts we completed a number of tasks including checking bearings, filling in logbooks, observing the ocean, and drinking warm drinks during the cold morning. In the early hours of the morning as the rain trickled upon our skin, we closed the hatches to protect our comrades from the chilly breeze. After we returned to our sleeping quarters, we were awakened from our slumbers by the ear-piercing sound of a bugle.
Following this, we were greeted by the strong aroma of the delectable baked beans, fresh eggs and toast which had us drooling for breakfast. This gave us the energy to try our best in the following activity of a knot-tying competition (which we so happened to win). Following this competition everyone on board South Passage helped to prepare the sails for our trip to Orpheus Island.
Along the journey we encountered a number of sea creatures such as humpback whales, dolphins, and diamond-back mullets. These immersive interactions with open-water animals made us to open our eyes and truly appreciate the wildness of our planet. At Orpheus Island we stopped at Yank’s Jetty where our school group decided to swim and snorkel. The coral that followed the shoreline was truly a treat to see. Post the stop, we embarked to Pioneer Bay where our vessel anchored for the night.
