REPORT: Blue Watch
Our morning started with an overcast drizzle as we were welcomed by our watch leader Charles, waking us up at 12.30AM. We began our watch by filling out the sailing terminology in our booklets. From there we located and documented our boats position on one of the maps by using longitude and latitude. We also learnt about navigation, and filling out logbooks.
To replenish our energy after a hard morning shift, we went back to sleep until 6:30AM, where we were woken up by a bugle horn. We then had our two breakfasts, sandwiching a bowline knot competition in between. Unfortunately, we encountered some rough weather, which made our backstay comp a little trickier and resulted in a three-way tie. But whales, dolphins and a flying fish lifted the morale amongst the ship! Lunch looked and smelt delicious.
Luckily dinner came around the corner for us, where it was a scrumptious beef stew, with potatoes, pumpkin, carrots and peas, and for dessert we had a berry danish accompanied by custard which lifted spirits. Blue watch then had the 18:00-20:00 shift, looking out for the lights in the channel, labelling our position on the map…also spying for bull sharks and crocodiles. Our shift ended and we settled down for bed.
