Why do we sail?
We sail to make connection with the sea, sun and wind. We sail to explore remote islands which stand out like green jewels in the big blue. We sail to connect with playful dolphins, soaring sea eagles, golden sunsets and the countless stars of the midnight sky.
We sail to step out of our comfort zone – the cramped quarters, along with the shared bathrooms, interrupted sleep, physical exhaustion. Add in the rolling seas, clean up duties and ocean swims and it sums up to an amazing experience.
We sail to connect with our maritime past. Five short days ago many did not know a halyard from a bowline. As we near the end of our voyage, we are astounded with the level of sail handling knowledge and skill and general seamanship of our crew. Today, our collective sea legs were put to the test with strong winds, requiring the adding a reef on the mainsail after it was raised. Tacking throughout the morning sail involving the duty watch as well as off watch crew eager to help was another testament to our growing skills.
We sail to make connection with our fellow adventurous souls. We sail to talk, laugh, sing, dance, listen and support our fellow sailors.
This is why we sail.
