REPORT: Red Watch
You might imagine what a typical morning on a boat may look like, 6:30am wake up, setting the sails and sailing off into the sunrise. Well, day 2 looks quite different… 4 am wake up, trying to physically throw myself out of bed like many others. Life jackets, setting the sails before the birds begin chirping, not much chatter amongst the crew. Then off to bed it was for Red Watch and Blue watch, for the unlucky white watch who had to sail the ship.
At 7:30am, Cath came down to wake the remainer of the sleep deprived sailors. Today we had a little bit more sleep, one hour to be exact… right in time for breakfast, which was scrambled eggs and baked beans, the breakfast of champions! Majority of Red and White watch stayed up on deck to eat breakfast and enjoy the breeze while it lasted. We didn’t get far until the breeze dropped out and the motor was turned on. Today, the conditions out were around 6.5 knots with sunny skies! (lots of sunscreen was applied)
We arrived at Percy at 1:30pm, just in time for a long walk around the island to meet a lovely man called Steve at the homestead which sat at the top of the island. Steve is a very knowledgeable man. He invited us into his home, kindly shared his insights about the island, his past sailing experiences and how he has lived off and on Percy for 40 years! Once it began to get dark, we made our way back down the island through the shorter steeper way where we encountered many goats and spiders!
Once we had made our way back to base, we had delicious goat stew and spaghetti bolognaise which was shared with the lovely Marty and Sam. Many laughs and conversation were shared followed by dessert of peaches and custard. Tonight we all hope to sleep well, (with no heavy snoring for anyone in particular) Rise and shine at 6 tomorrow to shine brass!
