South Passage Daily Report

CLIENT: Emmanuel College Bronze DofE Voyage

VOYAGE NUMBER:  20250503

FROM: Manly To: Manly

DATE: 4 May 2025

POSITION: Blakesley, North Stradbroke Is

REPORT: Red Watch

In the morning, we got woken up at 0630 by White Watch playing the bugle after Red Watch had an early morning shift from 0001-0400 where they were on anchor watch. This required Red Watch to make sure that the bearings were very similar to make sure we weren’t moving.

We first had a cold breakfast (cereal) and then we did a knotting competition where we competed with the reef knot and the figure 8 where everyone completed the knot correctly. We then cleaned the bathrooms and swept all the floors and then had a hot breakfast of eggs, beans and toast.  After breakfast we had a backstay competition which resulted in a three-way tie between all of the watches; red, blue and white.

At 0900 we had to prep the sails, where we put up the foresail and the staysail up, however we kept the mainsail down due to expected high winds.  We then raised the anchor manually and headed off to sail.

At 1500 we anchored the ship and took the tender to North Stradbroke Island. We then had a swim and played some soccer. After an hour and a half, we took the tender back to the ship and did the bowline knot competition where blue watch won.

After the knot competition, we went downstairs to have showers and write in our journals. For dinner, we had mashed potatoes, vegetables, sausages, and chicken legs and for dessert we had cheesecake. Red watch had to set up the bearings for anchor watch and complete the log.
