CLIENT: Youth Voyage
VOYAGE NUMBER: 20241217
FROM: Sydney To: Sydney
DATE: 17 December 2024
POSITION: Rose Bay
REPORT: White Watch
We set off starting with an introduction to the ship learning about tying knots, raising and lowering the sails, and how we should respond depending on wind direction and speed. We left from Kings Wharf and tacked our way across Sydney Harbour to Taronga Zoo Bay where we stopped for a swim and lunch which consisted of a ham salad sandwich and rockmelon. With a breath-taking view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the famous Opera House, we were able to sail our way across to Rose Bay completing a full tack in the process.
Throughout the day, white watch was on the mainsail, red watch was on the foresail and blue watch was on the head sails. Once we made it to Rose Bay, we dropped the sails and the anchor. We had a knot tying competition, which blue won. Dinner consisted of chicken drumsticks with rice, carrots, peas and gravy, followed by an apple and berry Danish with custard for dessert.
We ended up doing approximately 20 nautical miles throughout the day, with wind speeds between 20 and 30 knots. The weather was hot and sunny all day however a storm front came across at around 5:00, causing the wind to pick up significantly and the air to cool down.
