CLIENT: Our Lady of the Southern Cross College Dalby
VOYAGE NUMBER: 20241104
FROM: Manly To: Manly
DATE: 04 November 2024
POSITION: Tangalooma, Moreton Is
REPORT: White Watch
On the South Passage voyage of November 4th, 2024, white watch experienced various extents of sailing. On the joint watch of the morning, white watch learnt how to tie round turn two half hitch knots, reef knots, bowline knots, flaking and belaying of the ropes, and how to use a back stay. After this, we did a man overboard drill with the whole ship, which entailed throwing a buoy overboard as well as a dan buoy and the life ring and circling after it to pick it up.
On our second watch, with just us white watch, we went through two tacks, challenging us on our bravery and skills which we have previously learnt. One challenge in the voyage was on our second tack, where we had to start redirecting the ship as the path that was initially navigated was too shallow and we had a cargo chip tailing behind us.
Other than these challenges, however, the two tacks that white watch did went very well. Surprisingly, we did not expect to have such control over the ship and have five different positions, such as the helm, the lookouts, and the backup lookouts, to be necessary to drive the ship. We most enjoyed the ending result and seeing how far we’d gotten as a team and the rewards of working hard together. Ultimately, day two of white watches South Passage voyage was successful, interesting, challenging, but most of all enjoyable.
