DATE: 15 September 2024

POSITION: St Helena Is

REPORT: Blue Watch

We started the day bright-eyed, and bushy tailed at the ungodly hour of 12am sharp with our first shift. This shift included filling out our navigation booklets and revising key rules of wayfinding with the use of maps. We also measured the direction of the ship using a compass and waypoints.

When we woke up at 6:30, we all prepared for the upcoming rope competition where our skills of the clove hitch were put to the test and ultimately was not fast enough to compete with the other watches.

After our tragic loss, we prepared for the day with a serve of hot breakfast, today a delicious hashbrown with spaghetti on toast. Once we were all energised and ready for the day, we got prepared by putting on our trusty sailing gloves and our sun safety equipment. We raised the main sail at approximately 9:30am, heading for St Helena Island. Due to unfortunate and uncontrollable weather events (lack of wind), the journey was prolonged.

Our second shift of the day begun at 10 am. We rotated through different duties such as the helm where we directed the vessel, the starboard lookout where we used our keen eyes to watch out for any possible danger, etc.

At 12 o’clock where the hard yakka came to an end, we were invited by the beloved cook to enjoy our burritos. We then anchored and swam around the ship. Where we enjoyed a fun time in the water. Blue watch was on break until dinner at 6 which was a delectable chicken stir fry and fruit salad. This is where our sailing endeavours ended for the day.
