CLIENT: Townsville Grammar School
VOYAGE NUMBER: 20240717
FROM: Townsville To: Townsville
DATE: 18 July 2024
POSITION: Pioneer Bay, Orpheus Is
REPORT: Red Watch
This morning, we were greeted by an amazing sunrise, and a strong cold wind. This begun our voyage to Pioneer Bay, Orpheus Island. We had a rope tying competition followed by some warm porridge that brought feeling back into our fingers. Red Watch completed the Round Turn and Two-Half hitches knot faster than every other group.
Then we set sail towards the Yanks Jetty at Orpheus Island. With all hands-on deck, we raised the main sail, foresail and front sails, leaving West Point in the dust. One of us fell victim to the rough waves and did not have a great morning. The white and red watches worked throughout the day swapping between Port Lookout, Standby Port Lookout, Starboard Lookout, Deck Check, Standby Helm and Main Helm. We followed the course 315 heading towards a thumb-like rock at Hinchinbrook Island, far in the distance with Palm Island to our Starboard. We used a chart to mark our day’s location throughout the day using longitude and latitude.
After a delicious lunch, many of us went downstairs to have a nap but a lucky few remaining upstairs saw whales tail flipping and breaching nearby. The wind had almost disappeared by midday, so we relied on our engine to get us to Yanks Jetty and Pioneer Bay. Hopefully it comes back tomorrow.
After a refreshing swim, jetty-jumping and jumping off the boat at Orpheus Island, we showered and competed in our second Rope-Tying competition of a Reef Knot and Figure-eight knot with White watch winning. We then continued to Pioneer Bay and feasted on Bangers and Mash and Sticky Date Pudding, gifted with a beautiful sunset. Esther, Lily, Chelsea, Kelsey, Sienna, Luella, Phil, Sydney, Layt
