Today began bright and early with White Watch rising at 4am! We took bearings to monitor the boats anchorage and defined some sailing terms that we’re beginning to understand…sort of. We then put to use our good old elbow grease to polish brass. After a delicious hot brekky of hash-browns, spaghetti and toast, some of us had the privilege of cleaning the heads (bathrooms).
We enjoyed a brief tour of the Newcastle waterfront and began sailing north. We saw dolphins on our way to Broughton Island in between the almost constant tacking. At lunch time, our burgers were difficult to eat as the boat was on quite a steep lean (a very, very steep lean), but we managed. People were able to sit on the bowsprit as waves went over their heads keeping them drenched for a good length of time. Pretty much as soon as White Watch took over shift, we had to lower the main sail to two reefs. The rest of the shift was pretty cruisy and afterwards, we were able to enjoy a delicious madeira cake for our afternoon tea.
We anchored at Broughton Island at around 4pm where many swam and explored the beach for a couple of hours. We returned to the ship and cleaned up in preparation for dinner, a fantastic steak, potato, beans, pumpkin and gravy combination. Before commencing the reef knot tying competition, that we unfortunately didn’t win, Sam, our Bosun, spotted “wicked tuna” under the ship. For desert, we had sticky date pudding with the optional addition of cream or custard, after which people played cards and chatted before bed.
