CLIENT: Young Mariners Voyage

VOYAGE NUMBER:  20230801

FROM: Townsville to Mackay

DATE: 1 August 2023

POSITION: Long Beach, Cape Cleveland

REPORT: White Watch

We departed from Townsville to Magnetic Island where we took a short stop to swim and have some fun off the ship. Before we left, we learnt the round turn & half hitch knot and halyard + hitch finish. We also learnt how to operate backstays which challenged our teamwork and trust. This became very useful when we used the wind to sail. We also took on different positions around the ship to experience the individual jobs we could have. One of the positions are called ‘helm’ which requires us to steer the ship and make sure we are travelling in the right direction. It was really fun to have a go at this.

On our night watch, we lowered the mainsail down as a whole crew and our watch group specifically learnt how to secure a gasket and the snotter. For lunch, we had salad sandwiches and for dinner, we had chicken and vegetable with potato gravy. For dessert we had apple pie with custard. Special shoutout to Chef Hugh for the delicious food! Unfortunately, we got a little bit seasick but it was manageable and still had a fun day altogether. We have another watch in the morning from 04:00 to 08:00 so hopefully this goes smoothly.
