South Passage Daily Report

CLIENT: Ormiston College

VOYAGE NUMBER:  20200918

FROM: Manly to Manly

DATE: 18 September 2020

POSITION:  Big Sand Hills, Moreton Is

REPORT BY: Blue Watch

We arrived at William Gunn jetty at 8:00 am and boarded the ship after having our temperatures checked and our hands sanitised. After storing our gear, we were introduced to the crew who showed us the ropes. We departed the jetty at 9:30 am and began our journey towards Moreton Island.

Throughout the morning, we learned how to tack. Not long after, students were proficient in applying their skills to help operate the ship with guidance of the crew. Each watch took turns to tack, steer and keep lookout. After all this work, students were rewarded with a lunch of salad rolls at about 12:00 pm.

With each break, students were given the opportunity to sit on the bowsprit while attached to a harness. The conditions were perfect up until shortly before we lowered the sails. We encountered a brief thunderstorm but it went as quickly as it came. Students showed persistence and resilience as they continued to lower the sails throughout these difficult conditions. Once the rain had passed we could see a rainbow above Moreton Island.

As the day came to an end, students witnessed a beautiful sunset with dolphins swimming through the water. For dinner we had chicken drumsticks with vegetables and rice topped with gravy. This was followed by a lovely dessert of apple crumbles and custard. Students settled down to an evening of cards and stargazing. Jean and Imogen
