This morning Red Watch woke up the rest of the crew with a beautiful bugle song. The sunrise over Palm Island was majestic as the watches battled it out in the knotting competition. It was such a challenging competition that first, second and third only had one second between them, with Red and Blue Watches tying for first place, putting the infamous Red Watch ahead by 2.5 points. A delicious hot breakfast was followed by a visit to Falcon Island. We hiked through the long grass and rocky terrain to the top for the most glorious view of the surrounding islands. The shells along the beach and coral fossils made over time were unique, and so was the crystal-clear water of the completely uninhabited island.
Upon our return to South Passage, we had yet another scrumptious lunch from Cath, then lifted up the anchor for the day’s sail. The seas were calm and the weather was tranquil and sunny – perfect for sailing and whale-watching. In fact, the weather was so perfect that we managed to complete our sail without the help of the engine. We were also treated to whales breaching as we progressed. We were amazed by the size of a U.S. war vessel that was a whopping 203m long and stood out beautifully against the setting sun. We reached Magnetic Island, our destination, just after dinnertime as the last of the day’s light was fading away. The evening marked our all-important official election of the leaders for the next day – captain, sailing master, navigator and watch leaders. We are now excited to see how our last day will unfold under the guidance of our youth leaders.
