Camp Group E discovered many skills today, including mastering 2 knots like the reef knot and the “bed knot”. We have learnt how to put up sails, learnt the names of the different parts of the boat. We went to Cape Cleveland, and saw many different animals, for example whales, turtles and dolphins. For lunch. most of us brought our own lunch, but there was sandwiches for those who didn’t, for dinner we had chicken with rice beans, carrots and gravy.
Throughout the day we practised the “bed knot” and then had a competition between the three groups (which we amazingly lost). Then blue watch hung out together and ended up telling silly riddles to each other. Later on we played some card games, sat and had a chat on the bow sprit of the boat.
We have the first night watch tonight. Getting the bearings and wind speed wasn’t as fun as it sounds, quite boring actually; however, eventually we pulled through. It’s a very calm night. Cool breeze outside that comes and goes, gently brushing your face as you’re walking up and down the deck. The voyage isn’t as bad as people say back at school. Its quite relaxing just swaying side to side as you’re talking to the crew or other friends.
We had a good day today it was calm and waters were not choppy so sailing was smooth and the best thing about South Passage is there is always some thing to do, even just help others. The day was good fun and a good introduction for an introductory sail. Enjoyed being able to eat a large portion because I was really hungry after a hard day.
