South Passage Daily Report

CLIENT: General Public Voyage

VOYAGE NUMBER: 20170703

FROM: Townsville TO: Cairns

DATE: 8 July 2017

POSITION: Milln reef

Report by: Red Watch

We began the day at 0600 to polish the brass, before having breakfast. At 0700 all watches participated in a competition for the sheet bend knot, which Red Watch won.

Later, the watches participated in a competition to identify key points of the ship; this competition was won by Blue Watch. We cast off from Fitzroy Island at approximately 0930.

Unlike the conditions earlier in the week, the South-Easterly winds were much stronger, allowing us to sail quite efficiently from Fitzroy Island to Milln Reef. However, the stronger winds resulted in greater turbulence on the water, and some of us became seasick on the way over.

We reached Milln Reef at approximately 1430, allowing us to spend the rest of the afternoon snorkelling and swimming near the ship. In the evening, we held a trivia night, with the subject being our South Passage voyage and other sailing terminology, which White Watch won.

Finally, the watches elected our Skipper, Sailing Master and Navigator for the final day of sailing tomorrow. After a week of training, we will have the opportunity to bring ourselves into Cairns harbour independently.
